Horizontal Tube Design Makes for a Comfortable Sleeping Area
Two Brass Valves for Easier Deflation
Stuff Sack and Repair Kit Included
The Featherlite Series is extremely lightweight and compact. Since it does not contain any foam, once inflated, all you have is the weight of the fabric and air. If you choose the regular size, your pad will weigh just over 1 pound. If you go with the Long size, you will be just above a pound and a half. Inflation takes just a couple of minutes and is done via the included pump near the head of the pad. When it's time to store the pad in your pack, it compacts very small so you're not taking up a lot of room in your pack. As with all ALPS air pads, the Featherlite series features brass valves for long-term durability and comes with a stuff sack and repair kit, so there's not a bunch of accessories to purchase after you get your air mat.
ALPS prides themselves on making private-label, high-quality gear for several companies in the outdoor industry. Since we are the manufacturer for the Cabela's Ultralight Air Pads... and since the Cabela's Ultralight air pad is the same design and spec as our in-line Featherlite air pads (with the exception of color and logo), we thought it was appropriate to share this testimonial with you.
I was skeptical about ordering this pad due to it having a built in pump (normally do not work properly and just add weight) and the low R rating. (1)
I was in the market for a good pad for backcountry hunting trips and our expedition kayak fishing trips so weight was of course a concern but pack size was very important as well.
After receiving this pad and taking the time to inspect the quality and construction I must say I am impressed.
The built in pump is a "CPR" style foam section of the pad that self inflates and allows you to press air into the pad....works way better than I thought it would. Had the pad completely inflated in under 3 min once i got the hang of it.
There are 2 brass valves on this pad and allows you to quickly deflate and fold up in a very short amount of time...(under 60 seconds)
What I really love about this pad is the fact that it is 3.5" thick. This was very important to me due to my size and the fact that I am a side sleeper. I am 6'6" 220lbs and when i lay on this pad on my side I do not touch the ground with it fully inflated. And the length and width of this pad is true to size.
I included a few pictures to show what it looks like right out of the box and to give pack size reference. In the picture the pad is simply folded in half then rolled up to fit back inside of the stuff sack provided. (4.5"X12") I think that if i trifold this pad instead then I would be able to achieve a smaller dimension.
Now with all of this being said there are only two things that I have a little worry about but only time will tell if these cons cause a problem.
(#1) The 40 denier is tough but not as tough as some other pads on the market with thicker material. Only time will tell to see if this quality holds up...but since this is a cabelas brand product you get one heck of a warranty so even if it wears out...who cares...send it back.
(#2) The valve on the built in pump plugs snug but after time will this snugness stay firm or become loose and cause me to wake up on a flat mattress in the middle of the night due to it loosening up and allowing air to leak?? who knows... Keep in mind this plug is the third plug in the mattress...the other two are brass and threaded so you twist them to release air to deflate...this one is not threaded and simply pushes in to seal.
All in all I think for the money this pad will be tough to beat and the sense of security with the cabelas warranty is worth its weight in gold.
