Add an ALPS Mountaineering foam mat to the bottom of your sleeping bag to improve the level of comfort. Available in four sizes, you can choose the one that best fits your needs. The foam mats are all extremely lightweight so you won't be hauling along too much extra weight on your next hike, but will be adding enough padding to make a noticeable difference in how well you sleep at night. The textured foam insulates to keep you warmer and also keeps the mat from sliding around. Each foam mat comes with straps so when you're finished, you can roll it up and easily transport and store it.
Good sleeping pad overall for the price. Latest season I used it in was mid-Autumn and was fine, temperature-wise. My only complaints are that it's tough to get/keep flat if you get up, and you can slip off it a bit during the night, but can't complain for this price.
The first thing you notice about this is the weight - or lack thereof. I bought the large size to use in winter comping as an insulator from the snow. This size is big enough to keep your entire bag off the ground or snow. It weighs only 16.5 oz.
The pad is softer than other closed cell foam pads. I can't wait to sleep on it.
The surface is textured so my bag doesn't slide off of it.
I'm going to buy another because my other family members won't give it back!
This is a great mat for car camping, though perhaps the largest size you would want to backpack with. I'm considering cutting it shorter so it rolls smaller (I'm 6'0"). It's a comfortable thickness and insulates well from the cold ground.
It is relatively durable, I don't think any normal threats (rocks, pointy things) are going to harm it. I attached it externally to my backpack and checked it as luggage with no protection and it somehow made it through with just a scrape.
